Opening Reflection: Living for the Light and Embracing Our Solar Consciousness
The smell of charcoal and lighter fluid. The anticipation of neighborhood fireworks stands opening their colorful doors. The freedom of bare feet on warm grass and slurping cold water from the garden hose after hours of chasing dragonflies in the backyard. These textures of my childhood Summer Solstice celebrations taught me everything I needed to know about what I now call Teacher Radiance—the sustainable way educators can shine their authentic light without burning out. When staying up past bedtime wasn't rebellion but reverence for the longest day of the year, I discovered that true radiance comes from joy, not sacrifice.
Dad would fire up the grill while my mom helped us set up the tent in the backyard for our annual tradition of sleeping under the stars during the peak of summer light. Even as a nine-year-old, I understood something sacred was happening. Mama Earth was tilting toward the sun with such generosity that light itself seemed reluctant to let go, stretching golden fingers across the sky until nearly 11 PM here in Idaho. It was magical.
Little did I know that those childhood moments of pure celebration and uninhibited joy would become a blueprint for understanding what I now call Teacher Radiance—the sustainable, authentic way educators can shine their light in service of others without burning themselves out.
Last Friday, June 20th, marked the Summer Solstice—the longest day of the year, when the sun reached its highest point and daylight stretched toward its peak expression. Here in Idaho, where I'm blessed to live just 85 miles from the dividing line between Pacific and Mountain time zones, the light still lingers until almost 11 PM right now. It's pure magic, just like those childhood evenings sleeping in our backyard tent.
Even now, I find myself drawn outside during these endless twilight hours, watching the sky hold onto golden light like a secret it's not quite ready to release.
This is the season I live for! I could honestly live in the Land of the Midnight Sun—that mystical place where summer light never fully surrenders to darkness. The flip side, of course, is that I'd struggle terribly with winter's long hours of darkness.
I understand the genius of my grandparents and great-grandparents, who perfected the art of following the seasons. As an 8th grader standing at the bus stop in 33-degree rain-snow mix, wind cutting through my jacket, waiting for the bus in the pre-dawn darkness, I thought their snowbird lifestyle was brilliant. I just didn't know then that I'd end up doing the same thing. I'm deeply grateful that this work has given me the freedom to follow the light.
My family before me understood what I'm still learning: we're allowed to structure our lives around what nourishes us. We're allowed to celebrate our need for radiance and warmth.
This Summer Solstice, I keep thinking about solar consciousness—not the burning intensity that depletes us, but the sustainable radiance that nurtures all life. Like the sun at its peak, we can shine our brightest light without dimming others. We can embody generous abundance without burning out. We can celebrate the fullness of our gifts while honoring the natural cycles of expansion and rest.
As teachers and nurturers, we often think we need to choose between shining brightly and conserving energy. But the summer sun teaches us differently—it gives generously because it knows its source is infinite. It illuminates everything equally. It provides warmth without attachment to the outcome.
This is the invitation of Summer Solstice energy:
Remember that your light is not meant to be hidden, that your radiance serves others best when it flows from a full, sustainable source, that celebrating your natural brightness is actually a gift to the world.

Signs Along the Way: Permission to Shine Without Burning Out
During these longest days of the year, I've been reflecting on how different our relationship with service and teaching could be if we approached it with something I've only recently learned about, solar consciousness. What if we could give as generously as the summer sun—not from depletion, but from connection to an infinite source?
The Summer Solstice holds the full spectrum of what it means to embody radiant life force in harmony with natural cycles. In this weekend's Yoga Nidra, we'll explore some of these teacher archetypes. These archetypes together are what I call Teacher Radiance.
The Illuminator who brings clarity and vision to all they touch—like the teacher who helps students see their own potential
The Nurturer who provides warmth and energy for growth—creating the conditions where others can flourish
The Celebrant who finds joy in life's abundant expressions—remembering that enthusiasm is contagious
The Giver who shares generously from an infinite source—knowing that true abundance flows through us, not from us
The Radiant One who shines authentically from their core truth—no longer hiding their light or apologizing for their gifts
These energies aren't locked into summer—they're different ways of shining that you can access year-round. You might think of them like different rays of sunlight: when you need clarity, you call upon the Illuminator. When growth needs nurturing, you embody the Nurturer. When life calls for celebration, you become the Celebrant.
As you move through this Summer Solstice weekend, I invite you to consider:
What would it look like to teach and nurture from the sustainable radiance of solar consciousness rather than the burning intensity of depletion?
How might embodying these qualities serve not just you, but everyone you love and care for?
What if your natural brightness—rather than your endless giving—is actually your greatest gift to the world?

What I’m Working On
Sound healing breakthrough: I've been wanting to incorporate my crystal singing bowls and Koshi chimes into online offerings for awhile now, but I kept getting stuck on the technical side—finding the right Zoom settings so the sound quality would actually do justice to these beautiful instruments. I think I've finally cracked the code! I'm planning to test it out this Sunday night during our practice, so fingers crossed the technology cooperates with the magic.
What I’m Celebrating
🎉 Summer Solstice magic and childhood memories: These endless light-filled evenings in Idaho where twilight stretches until almost 11 PM, just like when I was a kid and got permission to stay up later to celebrate the light. I love the muted colors of the western sky as it holds onto the fading light like it's reluctant to let go. Summer just makes me happy...
🎉 Growing community: Watching teachers and nurturers remember that their light doesn't need to dim for others to shine. We can all be radiant simultaneously—like summer meadows full of wildflowers, each one brilliant and unique.
Journal Prompts for Embodying Solar Consciousness This Summer Solstice Weekend
As we celebrate the longest day of the year, these prompts can help you explore your own solar consciousness and relationship with sustainable radiance:
What would it look like to give from the generous abundance of the summer sun rather than from depletion? How might my teaching/nurturing change if I operated from this infinite source?
Where in my life am I hiding my light or apologizing for my natural radiance? What would change if I gave myself permission to shine authentically?
How can I honor both my need for light and my need for rest? What would sustainable radiance look like in my daily life?
If I could embody one aspect of solar consciousness this week—Illuminator, Nurturer, Celebrant, Giver, or Radiant One—which would serve me most? How might the summer sun express this energy?
What am I ready to celebrate about my own gifts and contributions? How might genuine self-celebration serve others?

A Quick Summer Tea Tip ~ Fancy a Cuppa?
Now that it's warmer, I've been sipping a cooling blend that perfectly captures the refreshing spirit of summer—mint leaves steeped and cooled, then mixed with Inner Fillet Aloe Vera juice and served over ice.
I take 5-6 fresh mint leaves from the plant in my garden, steep them in hot water, then let the tea cool completely. I add about 1/2 cup of Inner Fillet Aloe Vera juice and serve it over ice. The mint provides that bright summer freshness while the aloe vera offers gentle cooling and hydration—perfect for these long, warm days. I don't, but if you're looking for a sweetness, I think a bit of honey would do the trick!
Note: As always with herbal remedies, if you have any health conditions or take medications, check with your healthcare provider before trying new herbs or supplements.
A tall glass of cooling mint aloe tea is like liquid celebration of summer's gentle nourishment. 🌱✨
